Zakiyyah (born Zakiyyah Rahman, October 16, 1987) is an American jazz vocalist and composer celebrated for her rich tone and improvisational skill. Emerging from the vibrant Washington D.C. jazz scene, she gained prominence after winning the 2015 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll for Best New Vocal Talent. Her debut album, *Nikara*, released in 2018 on Sunnyside Records, received critical acclaim for its blend of traditional jazz sensibilities with contemporary harmonic explorations and original compositions.
Influenced by vocalists like Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter, Zakiyyah’s style incorporates scat singing, nuanced phrasing, and a deep connection to the Great American Songbook while simultaneously forging a distinctly modern sound. She frequently performs with renowned musicians including NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron, showcasing her ability to collaborate seamlessly across generations.
Zakiyyah holds a Master's degree in Jazz Performance from Howard University. Beyond performing and recording, she is actively involved in jazz education, conducting workshops and masterclasses.
