Experience William Christie

William Christie is a leading figure in the revival of Baroque music, renowned for his historically informed performance practice. Born in Buffalo, New York, in 1944, he initially studied musicology at Harvard University before moving to Europe and dedicating himself to harpsichord performance and vocal coaching. In 1979, Christie co-founded *Les Arts Florissants*, a celebrated Baroque ensemble specializing in French opera and chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries – particularly the works of Lully, Charpentier, and Rameau.

Christie’s approach emphasizes clarity of texture, expressive ornamentation, and a vocal style rooted in period treatises. He champions dramatic authenticity alongside musical precision. *Les Arts Florissants* gained international acclaim for groundbreaking productions at venues like the Opéra Comique in Paris and internationally touring operas like *Atys* (Lully).

Beyond performing, Christie founded *Le Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles* (The Versailles Baroque Music Centre) in 2007, furthering research and training in Baroque performance. He has received numerous awards including the Légion d'Honneur (France) and an honorary doctorate from Oxford University.
