Experience Werner Acker
Werner Acker (1924-2017) was a pioneering Dutch composer and performer, largely self-taught, who significantly impacted the development of electronic music in the Netherlands. Beginning in the 1950s, he experimented with self-built electronic instruments – notably the “Electro-Son”, a complex oscillator-based system – predating widespread access to synthesizers. His early work involved musique concrète techniques, manipulating recorded sounds.
Acker’s style is characterized by abstract soundscapes, often incorporating elements of serialism and aleatoricism (chance music). He wasn’t focused on conventional melody or harmony, instead prioritizing timbre and texture. He held positions at the Institute for Sonology at the University of Utrecht from 1967 until his retirement in 1989, influencing generations of students.
Though relatively unknown outside avant-garde circles during his lifetime, Acker's compositions have experienced renewed interest posthumously. Key works include *Sonate voor twee fluiten* (Sonata for Two Flutes) and numerous pieces created with his Electro-Son.
