Vasily Petrenko is a renowned Russian-British conductor celebrated for his dynamic interpretations and leadership in the classical music world. Born in 1976 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Petrenko trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory before quickly rising to international prominence. He gained critical acclaim as the Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held from 2006 to 2021, where he revitalized the orchestra's profile with innovative programming and recordings.

Petrenko’s conducting style is noted for its passionate intensity, precision, and deep understanding of Russian repertoire, particularly works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Rachmaninoff. His interpretations balance emotional depth with technical clarity, earning praise from critics and audiences alike.

In addition to Liverpool, Petrenko has served as Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic since 2013 and was appointed Chief Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra starting in 2021.
