Experience Urszula Dudziak
Urszula Dudziak is a Polish jazz vocalist renowned for her extraordinary vocal range – spanning five octaves – and pioneering vocal improvisation techniques. Born in Strzelce Wielkie, Poland, in 1943, she rose to prominence in the 1970s with the influential Polish jazz ensemble Jazz Collective, quickly establishing herself as a leading figure in the European jazz scene.
Dudziak’s style blends traditional jazz with elements of avant-garde, free improvisation, and Polish folk music. She’s celebrated for her unique vocalizations, often incorporating non-verbal sounds and extended techniques that push the boundaries of vocal performance. A key aspect of her artistry is *papla*, a form of scat singing utilizing Polish phonetic sounds.
Throughout her career, she has collaborated with numerous international jazz greats including Archie Shepp, Dexter Gordon, and Janusz Muniak. Dudziak relocated to the United States in the 1980s and continues to record and perform globally. She's released over thirty albums as a leader or co-leader and received numerous awards recognizing her contributions to jazz music, including multiple Jazz Forum Awards and honorary doctorates from Polish universities.
