Experience Ulf Wakenius
Ulf Wakenius is a Swedish jazz guitarist renowned for his lyrical improvisation and distinctive tone. Born in 1958, he rose to prominence in the late 1980s, initially gaining recognition within the Scandinavian jazz scene before achieving international acclaim. A long-standing member of Ray Charles’ backing band from 1990 until Charles’ death in 2004, Wakenius toured extensively and contributed significantly to the legend's live sound.
His playing style blends elements of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Jim Hall with a uniquely Swedish melodic sensibility. He’s equally comfortable in straight-ahead jazz, bossa nova, and more contemporary settings. Wakenius has released numerous albums as a leader on labels like ACT Music, including critically lauded recordings like "Forever" (1997) and “Isn’t It Romantic” (2001).
Beyond his work with Ray Charles, he's collaborated with artists such as Lars Danielsson, Viktoria Tolstoy, and Michelle Hendricks. He holds an honorary doctorate from Luleå University of Technology for his contributions to music and is a highly respected educator, holding professorships at several institutions.
