Tugan Sokhiev is a Russian conductor renowned for his compelling interpretations of Russian and 20th/21st-century repertoire. Born in 1979 in Buzdyak, Bashkortostan, Russia, he studied conducting with Ravil Martynov and later at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Sokhiev rose to prominence after winning the First International Prokofiev Conducting Competition in 2003.
He served as Music Director of the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (2009-2016), significantly raising its artistic profile internationally. Simultaneously, he held the position of Principal Conductor of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra (2011-2019), undertaking extensive touring and recording projects.
Sokhiev’s style is characterized by a dramatic intensity and nuanced understanding of orchestral color, particularly evident in his performances of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff. He has collaborated with leading orchestras worldwide including the London Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Notably, he received critical acclaim for his complete Shostakovich symphony cycle with the RSB Berlin.
