Experience Trane
John Coltrane, often referred to simply as Trane, was a towering figure in 20th-century jazz. Beginning his career in the early 1950s with bebop and hard bop ensembles like those led by Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges, and Earl Bostic, Coltrane quickly established himself as a technically brilliant tenor and soprano saxophonist. His landmark work with Miles Davis’ First Great Quintet (1955-1961), including albums like *Kind of Blue*, showcased his harmonic explorations and increasingly adventurous improvisations.
Coltrane then led his own influential quartet – featuring McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones – pushing the boundaries of modal jazz and developing his intensely spiritual “sheets of sound” technique. Albums like *Giant Steps* (1960) and *A Love Supreme* (1965) are considered cornerstones of the genre.
Throughout the 1960s, he continued to experiment with free jazz and avant-garde forms before his untimely death in 1967 at age 40.
