Experience Tõnu Kaljuste

Tõnu Kaljuste (born 1953) is an Estonian conductor, internationally renowned for his interpretations of contemporary choral music, particularly that of Arvo Pärt. He studied at the Tallinn Conservatory and quickly rose to prominence leading the Estonian National Male Choir from 1980-1995, transforming it into a world-class ensemble.

Kaljuste’s stylistic approach emphasizes clarity, precision, and a deeply spiritual quality, perfectly suited to Pärt’s minimalist and often sacred compositions. He’s credited with bringing Pärt’s music to global attention through numerous recordings and performances. Beyond Pärt, his repertoire encompasses works by Veljo Tormis, Erkki-Sven Tüür, and other significant Estonian composers alongside international figures like Alfred Schnittke and Henryk Górecki.

He served as Principal Conductor of the Swedish Radio Choir (1994-2004), achieving critical acclaim for their innovative programming and technical excellence. Kaljuste has received numerous awards including the Swedish Royal Academy of Music’s Gold Medal in 2003 and several Estonian state decorations.
