Tom O’Brien is a multi-instrumentalist and composer best known as the frontman and primary songwriter for the American indie rock band, Duster. Emerging from San Jose, California in the late 1990s, Duster pioneered a subgenre often dubbed “slowcore,” characterized by deliberately slow tempos, lo-fi production aesthetics, and melancholic lyrical themes. O’Brien’s distinctive vocal delivery – often hushed and monotone – became a defining feature of the band's sound.

While Duster initially disbanded in 2003 after releasing *Stratosphere* and *Inside the Planta*, they gained significant cult following through online music communities. O’Brien continued to compose and record under various aliases, including Ideal Black Flower and numerous instrumental projects exploring ambient and electronic textures.

Duster unexpectedly reformed in 2018, releasing the critically acclaimed *Grey Gardens* in 2019 followed by *All Our Sad Friends* in 2024 – both demonstrating a refined yet faithful continuation of their signature sound. His work consistently emphasizes atmosphere over virtuosity, influencing a new generation of artists drawn to introspective and minimalist songwriting.
