The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1925 as the Toho Orchestra, boasts a distinguished history as Japan’s first symphony orchestra. Initially established to accompany opera and ballet performances, it quickly evolved into a full-fledged orchestral ensemble. Throughout its nearly century-long existence, the orchestra has been led by prominent conductors including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Leonard Bernstein, and Lorin Maazel.

Known for its versatility, the Tokyo Philharmonic performs a broad repertoire spanning classical masterpieces to contemporary works and film scores. They maintain a strong commitment to commissioning new pieces from Japanese composers.
