TJ Johnson is a highly sought-after drummer, composer, and educator renowned for his work across jazz, funk, and soul. Born and raised in Chicago, he began playing drums at age four and quickly demonstrated prodigious talent, studying with legendary percussionists like Whitfield Williams. Johnson gained prominence as a long-standing member of Snarky Puppy (2008-2017), contributing significantly to their Grammy Award-winning albums *We Like It Here* (2014) and *Culcha Vulcha* (2016).
Beyond Snarky Puppy, Johnson leads his own ensembles – TJ Johnson & The Push – showcasing his compositions rooted in deep grooves and intricate arrangements. He’s collaborated extensively with artists including Cory Henry, Robert Glasper, and Terrace Martin. A dedicated educator, Johnson currently serves on faculty at the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.
