T.J. Johnson is a highly respected American jazz bassist, composer, and educator, prominently known for his long-standing association with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis since 1993. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Johnson’s early musical training included piano before focusing on the bass. He studied at Southern University and North Texas State University (now University of North Texas), developing a strong foundation in both performance and music education.

Johnson’s playing style is deeply rooted in the tradition of masters like Ray Brown and Paul Chambers, characterized by a warm tone, impeccable timekeeping, and melodic improvisation.
