Experience The Royal Danish Orchestra

The Royal Danish Orchestra (Det Kongelige Danske Kapel) boasts a history stretching back to 1489, making it one of the oldest orchestras in Europe. Originally established as a trumpeter corps for the Danish court, it evolved over centuries, formally becoming a royal orchestra in 1690. Throughout its long existence, it has served as the resident orchestra for the Royal Danish Opera, providing accompaniment for countless operatic and ballet productions.

The orchestra’s repertoire is exceptionally broad, encompassing Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary works. While deeply rooted in the Germanic tradition – influenced by composers like Mendelssohn who frequently conducted them – they also champion Danish composers such as Nielsen and Hartmann.

Renowned for its distinctive warm sound and precision, the orchestra has collaborated with leading conductors including Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein. They’ve recorded extensively for labels like Deutsche Grammophon and EMI/Warner Classics, earning numerous accolades including Gramophone's Orchestra of the Year award in 2008. Today, the orchestra continues to perform regularly at the Copenhagen Opera House and concert halls throughout Denmark and internationally.
