Experience The English Concert

The English Concert, founded in 1972 by Trevor Pinnock, stands as a pioneering force in the historically informed performance practice movement. Initially focused on Baroque music, the orchestra rapidly gained international recognition for its vibrant and scholarly interpretations of composers like Handel, Bach, and Purcell. Pinnock’s initial vision – utilizing period instruments and exploring original performance techniques – quickly established a distinctive sound characterized by clarity, agility, and expressive nuance.

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, The English Concert undertook extensive recording projects for Deutsche Grammophon, including landmark cycles of Handel’s operas and concerti grossi. Following Pinnock’s tenure as director (1972-1990), subsequent leaders included Philippe Jaroussky (2011-2017) and Harry Bicket (since 2007, currently Artistic Director).

While retaining its core Baroque repertoire, the ensemble has broadened its scope to encompass Classical and early Romantic works. They regularly perform at major international festivals and concert halls.
