Tadaaki Otaka (1928-2007) was a highly respected Japanese conductor renowned for his interpretations of 20th and 21st-century music, alongside a broad repertoire encompassing Romantic and Baroque periods. He studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna, significantly shaping his precise and insightful approach.
Otaka served as Music Director of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra for over three decades (1963-1988), transforming it into a nationally recognized ensemble. He championed contemporary Japanese composers like Akira Ifukube and Toru Takemitsu, premiering numerous works and fostering a vibrant musical landscape. Later, he held positions with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra.
Known for clarity of texture and rhythmic precision, Otaka’s recordings frequently featured works by Stravinsky, Bartók, and Prokofiev, earning critical acclaim. He was particularly celebrated for his complete recording of Stravinsky’s ballets – *The Firebird*, *Petrushka*, and *The Rite of Spring* – with the London Symphony Orchestra.
