The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is Australia’s premier symphony orchestra, boasting a history stretching back to 1908. Originally founded as the Kensington Symphony Orchestra, it evolved into the NSW State Orchestra before adopting its current name in 1934. Throughout its career, the SSO has cultivated a reputation for both innovative programming and masterful interpretations of classical repertoire.
Known for a vibrant and dynamic sound, the orchestra regularly commissions new Australian works alongside performing established composers like Beethoven, Mahler, and Debussy. They’ve undertaken numerous international tours, including performances at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the BBC Proms.
The SSO has released over 20 commercially available recordings, garnering critical acclaim and ARIA awards. Notable Chief Conductors have included Eugene Goossens, Willem van Otterloo, and David Robertson. Currently led by Chief Conductor & Artistic Director Fabien Gabel, the orchestra is also deeply committed to community engagement through education programs and accessible concert experiences, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of Australian cultural life. They are resident at the iconic Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.
