Susanna Mälkki is a Finnish conductor and cellist internationally renowned for her insightful interpretations of contemporary and 20th-century repertoire, alongside a compelling approach to standard orchestral works. Born in Helsinki in 1961, she initially established herself as a celebrated cellist, winning the Finnish National Cello Competition in 1983. However, her focus shifted towards conducting, studying with Leif Segerstam and Jorma Panula.
Mälkki served as Chief Conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra (2003-2012), significantly raising its profile. She was the first female conductor to hold the position of Chief Conductor at the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (2016-2022), further cementing her reputation for innovative programming and dynamic performances. Currently, she is Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, appointed in 2016.
Known for her meticulous preparation and ability to draw nuanced performances from orchestras, Mälkki champions composers like Kaija Saariaho – premiering several of her works – and has recorded extensively with BIS Records.
