Experience Steve Reich

Steve Reich is a pioneering American composer widely regarded as one of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Born in 1936, Reich rose to prominence in the 1960s, becoming a central figure in the minimalist movement alongside composers like Philip Glass and Terry Riley. His early works, such as *It's Gonna Rain* (1965) and *Come On* (1965), explored phasing techniques – subtly shifting identical musical patterns out of sync to create mesmerizing rhythmic and harmonic effects.

Reich’s style is characterized by repetitive structures, gradual processes, and a focus on pulsating rhythms. He often draws inspiration from speech patterns, as demonstrated in *Different Trains* (1988), which incorporates recorded train sounds and spoken words relating to his childhood experiences during the Holocaust.

Throughout his career, Reich has composed for a variety of ensembles, including percussion, voices, and orchestra. He has received numerous awards including a Pulitzer Prize for Music (2009) for *Double Sextet*, three Grammy Awards, and the Polar Music Prize.
