Experience Steve Coleman
Steve Coleman is a highly influential American jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator renowned for his innovative approach to rhythm and improvisation. Born in Chicago in 1956, Coleman developed his unique style studying with Julius Hemphill and performing with Cecil Taylor in the 1980s. He’s best known for founding the collective group Steve Coleman and Five Elements in 1985, a vehicle for exploring his groundbreaking “M-Base” (Microtonal Bass) concept – a complex system integrating elements of funk, hip-hop, African polyrhythms, and advanced harmonic theory.
Coleman's compositions emphasize cyclical grooves, asymmetrical phrasing, and collective improvisation demanding exceptional virtuosity from his musicians. He's released over thirty albums as a leader or co-leader, including critically acclaimed recordings like *Rhythm People* (1990) and *Curves* (1994).
A MacArthur Fellow (2014), Coleman has received numerous awards including multiple Grammy nominations. Beyond performance, he’s dedicated to music education through workshops and mentorship programs, fostering a new generation of improvisers.
