Stefon Harris is a highly acclaimed American jazz vibraphonist, composer, and educator. Born in Warrensville Heights, Ohio in 1970, Harris rose to prominence in the 1990s, quickly establishing himself as a virtuosic improviser and innovative voice within the jazz scene. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vibraphone Competition in 1989.
Harris’s style blends post-bop sensibilities with elements of funk, R&B, and world music, characterized by complex harmonies, rhythmic sophistication, and a distinctive melodic approach. He’s renowned for his four-mallet technique and exploration of extended vibraphone techniques.
Throughout his career, Harris has released numerous albums as a leader, including *A Different Kind of Blue* (1999) and *Carbon* (2013), receiving consistent critical praise. He's collaborated with artists like Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and Robert Glasper.
