Sophia Rahman is a British pianist renowned for her versatile and insightful interpretations of a broad repertoire, spanning from Bach to contemporary composers. Born in 1975, she studied at the Royal College of Music with Yonty Solomon and Imogen Cooper, winning the Gold Medal in 1996 – the RCM’s highest award.
Rahman’s career encompasses solo performances with leading orchestras worldwide, including the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, and Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. She is particularly celebrated for her compelling performances of Romantic and 20th/21st-century music, notably works by Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Ligeti.
A dedicated chamber musician, Rahman frequently collaborates with ensembles like the Emerson String Quartet and performs regularly at prestigious festivals including Aldeburgh and Wigmore Hall. Her discography includes critically acclaimed recordings of Chopin Nocturnes (Naxos), and a complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas. She's also known for championing lesser-known composers and innovative programming choices, reflecting a commitment to both tradition and contemporary musical exploration. Rahman currently holds a position as Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music.
