Songo, born Joseph Okello, is a Kenyan percussionist, vocalist, and bandleader renowned for his innovative fusion of traditional Kenyan Benga music with elements of jazz, funk, and Afrobeat. Rising to prominence in the 1970s with the Lijembe Band, Songo quickly became a pivotal figure in Nairobi’s vibrant music scene. He pioneered the use of the *nyatiti* (an eight-stringed lyre traditionally played by Luo musicians) in popular music, significantly broadening its audience.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Songo released numerous albums – including critically acclaimed works like *Dogo Dogo* – that showcased his distinctive vocal style and complex rhythmic arrangements. His music frequently addresses social issues alongside themes of love and everyday life. He collaborated with notable artists including Ayub Ogada and Thomas Mapfumo, further solidifying his international recognition.

Songo's influence extends beyond recordings; he’s known for energetic live performances characterized by captivating stage presence and improvisational skill. He continues to perform and record, maintaining a dedicated following both in Kenya and globally, preserving and evolving the sounds of Benga for new generations.
