The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO), founded in 1875, stands as China’s oldest and most prestigious orchestra. Initially established by German merchants, it evolved significantly under Chinese leadership post-1949, becoming a cornerstone of the nation's classical music scene. The SSO’s repertoire spans from standard Western classical works – Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler – to a strong commitment to contemporary Chinese compositions, frequently commissioning and premiering new pieces.

Currently led by Chief Conductor Yu Long, appointed in 2009, the orchestra has garnered international acclaim for its vibrant performances and innovative programming. Significant accomplishments include extensive touring throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, including critically lauded appearances at the BBC Proms in 2017 – the first mainland Chinese orchestra to perform there.

The SSO is renowned for its dedication to musical education and community outreach programs. They are resident at the Shanghai Symphony Hall, a state-of-the-art concert venue opened in 2003. The orchestra boasts a recording history with Deutsche Grammophon and continues to expand its digital presence, furthering its mission of cultural exchange and artistic excellence.
