Experience Shalamar

Shalamar emerged from Soul Train in 1978, initially as a pet project showcasing the dance talents of Jeffrey Daniel, Jody Watley, and Gary Hightower. Quickly evolving beyond a dance troupe, they transitioned into a highly successful musical group, blending funk, soul, R&B, and early electronic elements. Their breakthrough came with “Uptown First Class” (1982), followed by a string of international hits including “A Night to Remember,” “Dead Giveaway,” and “Friends.”

Watley’s departure in 1983 saw Carolyn Griffey join, maintaining Shalamar’s chart success throughout the mid-80s. Known for intricate choreography alongside their smooth vocal harmonies and sophisticated production (often with producers like Leon Sylvers III), Shalamar significantly impacted the sound of contemporary R&B.

The group experienced several line-up changes over the years, with Daniel remaining a consistent presence. They achieved platinum and gold records globally, earning multiple American Music Awards nominations and solidifying their place as pioneers of the post-disco era. Shalamar continues to perform today, celebrating their enduring legacy and influence on modern music and dance.
