Experience Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester
The Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester (Sinfonieorchester Schleswig-Holstein – SOSH) is a renowned German orchestra with a unique history, founded in 1973 as a joint initiative between the states of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. Unlike traditional, permanently established orchestras, the SOSH initially comprised primarily musicians from northern Germany’s freelance scene, fostering a distinctive collaborative spirit.
Over decades, it evolved into a fully professional ensemble, maintaining its commitment to project-based work and featuring guest conductors of international stature – Leonard Bernstein being an early and influential figure. The orchestra is celebrated for its versatility across repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary works, with a particular strength in Romantic and 20th/21st century compositions.
The SOSH regularly performs at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, a prestigious event it helped establish and remains central to. Numerous award-winning recordings document their discography, often focusing on lesser-known composers or innovative interpretations of standard repertoire. They frequently tour internationally and have received critical acclaim for their dynamic performances and commitment to musical education through outreach programs. Their current principal conductor is Sylvain Cambreling.
