The Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester (Sinfonieorchester Schleswig-Holstein – SOSH) is a renowned German orchestra with a unique history, founded in 1973 as a joint initiative between the states of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. Unlike traditional, permanently established orchestras, the SOSH initially comprised primarily musicians from northern Germany’s freelance scene, fostering a distinctive collaborative spirit.

Over decades, it evolved into a fully professional ensemble, maintaining its commitment to project-based work and featuring guest conductors of international stature – Leonard Bernstein being an early and influential figure. The orchestra is celebrated for its versatility across repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary works, with a particular strength in Romantic and 20th/21st century compositions.

The SOSH regularly performs at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, a prestigious event it helped establish and remains central to. Numerous award-winning recordings document their discography, often focusing on lesser-known composers or innovative interpretations of standard repertoire. They frequently tour internationally and have received critical acclaim for their dynamic performances and commitment to musical education through outreach programs.
