Sandy Evans is an Australian guitarist, composer, and educator renowned for blending jazz improvisation with Indian classical music traditions. Beginning her professional career in the 1980s, Evans quickly established herself as a significant voice in Australian jazz, initially influenced by artists like John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. However, a pivotal 1990s trip to India profoundly shaped her musical direction.

She began intensive study of Hindustani classical music, particularly the sitar, under the guidance of Pandit Ashok Pathak. This led to the formation of her long-running ensemble, Sandy Evans & The Inner Sense, which seamlessly integrates Western and Indian instrumentation – often featuring tabla, bansuri (flute), and sarangi alongside guitar, bass and drums.

Evans has released numerous albums receiving critical acclaim including “When Worlds Collide” (2006) and “Matra” (2017). She holds a PhD in Creative Arts from Macquarie University focusing on cross-cultural musical collaboration and is a dedicated educator at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Her work consistently explores themes of cultural exchange and spiritual depth within a sophisticated improvisational framework. She’s received several awards for her contributions to Australian music.
