Sam Reider is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger deeply rooted in American roots music, though his work transcends easy categorization. Initially recognized as a leading figure in the contemporary bluegrass scene with The Reider Family (formed 2011), he’s since forged a distinct solo path exploring connections between jazz improvisation, folk traditions, and experimental soundscapes.

Reider’s instrumental prowess spans banjo, guitar, piano, and mandolin; he’s particularly known for his innovative banjo playing. His debut solo album, *Branching Out* (2018), received critical acclaim for its sophisticated arrangements and lyrical depth. He followed this with *Once We Were*, released in 2023 to further praise, showcasing a broadened palette incorporating electronic elements alongside acoustic instrumentation.

Beyond his albums, Reider is a sought-after collaborator, having worked with artists like Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn. He's been a resident artist at FreshGrass Festival and has received support from the New England Foundation for the Arts through their Touring Caravan program.
