Experience Rufus Reid
Rufus Reid is a highly influential American jazz bassist, composer, and educator. Born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1944, Reid rose to prominence throughout the 1960s and 70s, becoming a sought-after sideman for jazz giants like Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Freddie Hubbard. He notably toured and recorded extensively with Joan Dylan during her brief foray into jazz.
Reid’s playing is characterized by a robust tone, melodic improvisation, and rhythmic drive – a style deeply rooted in the hard bop tradition but consistently evolving. He’s renowned for his walking bass lines and harmonic sophistication. Beyond performance, Reid dedicated decades to jazz education, serving as Director of the Jazz Studies program at William Paterson University from 1996-2018.
As a leader, he has released numerous critically acclaimed albums including *Out Front!* (1981), *Quiet Talk* (1986), and *Huesca* (2017). His book *The Evolving Bassist* is considered a foundational text for aspiring bass players.
