Experience Robbie Duncan
Robbie Duncan (born Robert Duncan, 1942-2011) was a Scottish folk singer-songwriter and guitarist, pivotal in the Edinburgh folk revival of the 1960s. Initially performing as a solo act in local pubs and clubs, Duncan gained prominence with The Country Gentlemen, a group showcasing his intricate fingerpicking guitar style and distinctive tenor vocals. He later formed The Robb Roy Band, achieving wider recognition through television appearances on programs like *Scotland the What?* and *The White Heather Club*.
Duncan’s songwriting blended traditional Scottish balladry with contemporary themes, often infused with social commentary and wry humor. His best-known compositions include "I Once Loved a Lass," “The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond” (a popular arrangement), and “The Gypsy Rover.” He released several albums throughout his career, including *Scotland's Story* (1968) and *Robbie Duncan* (1973).
Despite facing personal struggles with alcoholism that impacted his later career, Duncan remained a respected figure within the Scottish folk scene. He influenced numerous musicians and is remembered for his technical guitar skill and poignant lyricism.
