Experience Richard Wagner

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor primarily known for his operas (or "music dramas," as he preferred to call them). Born in Leipzig, his career was marked by both artistic innovation and personal controversy. Initially influenced by Weber and Meyerbeer, Wagner developed a uniquely chromatic harmonic language and a concept of *Gesamtkunstwerk* – a “total work of art” – integrating all theatrical elements: music, drama, poetry, scenic design, and stagecraft.

His most famous works include *The Ring Cycle* (*Das Rheingold*, *Die Walküre*, *Siegfried*, *Götterdämmerung*), a monumental four-opera epic based on Norse mythology; *Tristan und Isolde*; *Parsifal*; and *The Mastersingers of Nuremberg*. Wagner revolutionized opera form through *leitmotifs* – recurring musical themes associated with characters, objects or ideas – and extended orchestral forces to unprecedented levels.

He established his own opera house in Bayreuth, Germany, specifically designed to realize his artistic vision.
