Residentie Orkest The Hague (Royal Residentie Orkest) is a Dutch symphony orchestra with a distinguished history stretching back to 1904, founded by Willem Mengelberg as the “Orchestra van het Concertgebouw.” Initially linked to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, it became independent and relocated to The Hague in 1988, receiving its “Royal” designation in 1989.
The orchestra is renowned for its broad repertoire, spanning Baroque to contemporary works, with a particular strength in Dutch composers like Louis Andriessen and Peter Schat. Throughout its existence, it has collaborated with leading international conductors including Bernard Haitink, Neeme Järvi, and Stéphane Denève (currently its Chief Conductor).
Residentie Orkest is celebrated for innovative programming – often blending classical music with film screenings and cross-disciplinary performances – and a commitment to accessibility. They regularly perform at the Amare concert hall in The Hague and undertake international tours. Numerous commercially released recordings document their work, earning critical acclaim. Their dedication extends to education through outreach programs aimed at fostering a new generation of music lovers.
