Rebecca Roger Cruz is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and vocalist forging a unique space within contemporary jazz and experimental music. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and now based in New York City, Cruz’s work blends elements of jazz improvisation, electronic textures, and her Ecuadorian heritage.
She gained recognition as a member of several acclaimed ensembles including Vijay Iyer’s band (appearing on *Far From Over*), and has collaborated extensively with artists like Amirtha Mukthyar, Tyshawn Sorey, and Mary Halvorson. Cruz released her debut solo album, *Pelota*, in 2023 to widespread critical acclaim – *The Wire* praised its “intricate compositions” and “mesmerizing vocal work.”
Her style is characterized by layered vocals often incorporating looping and processing, alongside virtuosic performances on piano, synthesizer, and percussion. A graduate of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Cruz received a 2023 Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship recognizing her exceptional talent and potential.
