Rachel Z, born Rachel Zelkowitz, is a highly respected American pianist, composer, and arranger renowned for her sophisticated jazz fusion style. Emerging in the 1990s, she initially gained prominence as a member of Steps Ahead, replacing Joe Zawinul. Her solo career blossomed with the 1997 album *Go Back to Where You Came From*, showcasing her distinctive blend of acoustic piano, electronic textures, and world music influences.

Z’s playing is characterized by virtuosic technique, harmonic complexity, and improvisational flair – often described as a meeting point between Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. She’s collaborated extensively with diverse artists including Peter Gabriel (on the *Security* tour), Laurie Anderson, and Lenny Kravitz.
