Qur'an Shaheed is a highly respected American jazz drummer and composer, deeply rooted in the Philadelphia jazz tradition. Born in 1972, Shaheed began playing drums at age four, mentored by his father, a professional musician. He gained prominence as a long-standing member of The Sun Ra Arkestra, joining in 1992 and remaining a crucial figure until 2018 – a period encompassing extensive international touring and recording.

Shaheed’s style blends powerfully energetic drumming with intricate polyrhythms and a profound understanding of swing, reflecting influences from Elvin Jones and Max Roach alongside Sun Ra’s cosmic philosophy. Beyond the Arkestra, he's collaborated with luminaries like Archie Shepp, Byard Lancaster, and Odean Pope.

As a leader, Shaheed has released albums including "The Origin of Innocence" (2016) showcasing his compositions which explore spiritual jazz themes. He continues to perform and record actively, leading his own ensembles while preserving the legacy of Sun Ra through various projects. Shaheed is also an educator, passing on his knowledge and passion for jazz to future generations.
