Experience Pieter Wispelwey

Pieter Wispelwey is a Dutch cellist internationally renowned for his deeply insightful and technically assured interpretations of the cello repertoire, particularly the Bach Cello Suites. Born in 1962, Wispelwey initially studied with Marius Flothuis before pursuing further studies with Rostropovich, Paul Tortelier, and Siegfried Palm. He rose to prominence winning the Concertgebouw Prize in 1983.

Wispelwey’s career encompasses solo performances with leading orchestras worldwide, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. He is celebrated not only for standard repertoire – concertos by Dvořák, Elgar, and Schumann feature prominently – but also for championing lesser-known works.

A meticulous scholar, Wispelwey’s acclaimed recordings are often informed by extensive research into historical performance practice. His multiple recordings of the Bach Suites are considered benchmarks; notably his 1998 Channel Classics recording was praised for its clarity and emotional depth. He frequently performs and records on gut strings, striving for historically informed sound. Beyond performance, Wispelwey is a dedicated teacher holding positions at conservatories and giving masterclasses globally.
