Petr Rímský (born 1952 in Prague) is a Czech composer and pianist, renowned for his distinctive neo-romantic style blended with elements of minimalism and jazz harmony. He studied composition with Václav Dvořák at the Prague Conservatory and later with Olivier Messiaen in Paris. Rímský’s compositional output is diverse, encompassing orchestral works, chamber music, piano pieces, and vocal compositions including operas.
He gained international recognition with his orchestral cycle *Nocturnes*, noted for its evocative textures and lyrical melodies. A significant portion of his work explores themes of existentialism and spirituality. Rímský is also a celebrated pianist, frequently performing his own compositions alongside works by Debussy, Satie, and Janáček.
His opera *Edward III* (premiered 2004) received critical acclaim for its dramatic intensity and sophisticated orchestration. He has received numerous awards including the Czech Music Council Award and the Prix d'Honneur from the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Rímský currently teaches composition at the Academy of Music Arts in Prague, continuing to influence a new generation of composers.
