Experience Paul Agnew
Paul Agnew is a highly respected Scottish countertenor renowned for his interpretations of Baroque and Renaissance vocal music. Born in 1962, he initially studied medicine before dedicating himself to singing, training at the Royal College of Music and with James Bowman. He is particularly celebrated for his nuanced phrasing and expressive delivery, bringing a dramatic sensibility to often technically demanding repertoire.
Agnew co-founded The Sixteen with Harry Christophers in 1974, remaining a principal member for over two decades and contributing significantly to the ensemble’s rise to prominence. He has also enjoyed a prolific solo career, performing with leading orchestras and ensembles worldwide including Les Arts Florissants under William Christie – a particularly fruitful collaboration resulting in numerous recordings.
A dedicated educator, Agnew currently teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. His discography includes acclaimed recordings of Bach cantatas, Handel oratorios (particularly noted for his *Messiah* performances), and works by Monteverdi. He’s recognized not just for vocal agility but also for his commitment to historically informed performance practice, making him a significant figure in early music today.
