Paavo Järvi is an Estonian-Finnish conductor renowned for his insightful interpretations and technical precision. Born in 1969, he initially pursued a career as a percussionist before dedicating himself to conducting, studying with renowned figures like Leonard Bernstein and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Järvi rose to prominence as Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (2001-2011), significantly raising their international profile through adventurous programming and critically acclaimed recordings – notably a complete Sibelius symphony cycle.

He currently serves as Chief Conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, a position he assumed in 2019, and holds the title of Artistic Advisor to the Estonian Festival Orchestra, which he founded in 2011 focusing on historically informed performance practice. Järvi’s repertoire spans from the standard classical and romantic works to contemporary compositions, often championing lesser-known composers.

Known for his clarity of sound and meticulous attention to detail, Järvi frequently collaborates with leading orchestras worldwide. He has received numerous awards including a Gramophone Award for his recording of Nielsen’s symphonies and is widely respected for his dedication to both orchestral excellence and innovative concert formats.
