Experience Orville Breeveld
Orville Breeveld is a Surinamese musician, composer, and arranger renowned for his pioneering work in *kaskuru* music. Born in 1946 in Paramaribo, he initially gained recognition as a guitarist with the band The Surinamese Ramblers in the 1960s, exploring rock and roll and soul influences. However, Breeveld’s most significant contribution lies in his rediscovery and modernization of *kaskuru*, a traditional Maroon (descendants of escaped slaves) drumming and vocal style.
In the 1970s, he meticulously researched *kaskuru* amongst the Ndyuka people, learning its complex polyrhythms and oral traditions. He then formed the group Kaskuru and integrated these elements with contemporary instrumentation – bass guitar, keyboards, and horns – creating a unique fusion sound. This revitalized form of *kaskuru* gained international attention through performances across Europe and recordings like “Kaskuru Sounds” (1983).
Breeveld’s work isn't simply preservation; it’s innovative adaptation.
