The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (Wiener Rundfunkorchester, WRO) boasts a rich history dating back to 1938, initially founded as the “Grosses Deutsches Rundfunkorchester.” Post-WWII, it was re-established under the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). Renowned for its versatility, the WRO isn’t confined to a single genre; while deeply rooted in Viennese classical tradition – performing extensively with the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper – it’s also celebrated for its innovative approach to contemporary music and film scores.

The orchestra has a strong discography including numerous recordings of operetta, musical theatre, and orchestral works, often collaborating with leading soloists. Notably, they’ve undertaken extensive projects dedicated to the works of Franz Lehár and Robert Stolz, becoming synonymous with the “Silver Age” of Viennese operetta.
