Orchestra Nova, founded in 2017 by conductor Ward Stare, rapidly established itself as a dynamic force in the Virginia arts scene, initially as the Richmond Symphony’s “New Music” ensemble before becoming fully independent in 2023. The ensemble distinguishes itself through a commitment to innovative programming, blending contemporary classical works with reimagined classics and collaborations across genres.

Known for its adventurous spirit, Orchestra Nova champions living composers – including premieres by Joan Tower and Gabriela Lena Frank – alongside fresh interpretations of established repertoire. Performances frequently incorporate multimedia elements and take place in non-traditional venues throughout the Richmond area, aiming to broaden accessibility to orchestral music.

Prior to independence, as the Richmond Symphony’s new music arm, they received critical acclaim for their ambitious projects like “Electric Fields,” a collaboration with the band Okkervil River. Since becoming independent, they've continued this collaborative approach, focusing on community engagement and artist partnerships. Orchestra Nova consistently receives funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and local foundations, supporting their mission to redefine the orchestral experience.
