Experience Orchester Im Treppenhaus
Orchester Im Treppenhaus (literally "Orchestra in the Stairwell") is a German musical ensemble founded in 1971 by composer and pianist Rolf Kühn. Initially conceived as an experimental project, the group quickly gained recognition for its unique blend of jazz, classical, and avant-garde music, often incorporating elements of free improvisation and electronic soundscapes. Kühn, alongside saxophonist Conrad Albercht and bassist Holger Trüby (a long-standing member), formed the core of the orchestra throughout its active decades.
Their discography boasts over 30 albums released primarily on the ECM label, beginning with their self-titled debut in 1973. A defining characteristic is their spacious, atmospheric sound – often recorded in reverberant spaces like stairwells (hence the name) and churches – creating a distinctive sonic texture. They collaborated with notable artists including Tomasz Stańko and Enrico Rava.
Though largely inactive since the late 1990s following Kühn’s focus on film scores, Orchester Im Treppenhaus remains highly influential within European improvised music circles. Their work is celebrated for its innovative approach to orchestration and its evocative, dreamlike quality.
