Born on April 26, 1972, in Moscow, Lugansky began studying piano at the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory at the age of five. He later continued his education at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of renowned pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva.

Lugansky's career took off after winning several prestigious international piano competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994 and the Rachmaninoff Competition in 1990. These victories catapulted him into the global music scene, leading to collaborations with world-class orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic.
