Myung-Whun Chung is a South Korean-born British conductor and pianist, renowned for his versatile repertoire and insightful interpretations. Born in 1948, he initially gained recognition as a pianist, winning the Gold Medal at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1970. However, he transitioned to conducting, studying with Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan.

Chung served as Music Director of the Komische Oper Berlin (1988-1994) and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (1997-2015), significantly elevating both institutions internationally. He has held principal conductorships with orchestras including the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra.

Known for his clarity of sound and meticulous attention to detail, Chung’s performances span Baroque to contemporary works, with a particular affinity for Mahler, Shostakovich, and Beethoven. He’s celebrated for championing Asian composers and fostering cross-cultural musical exchange. A prolific recording artist, his discography includes numerous award-winning recordings on Deutsche Grammophon and Warner Classics. He continues to perform globally as a highly sought-after guest conductor, maintaining a vibrant career marked by artistic integrity and dedication.
