Mike Nock is a highly respected jazz pianist and composer, born in Buffalo, New York in 1940. He relocated to Australia in 1963 and became a pivotal figure in the Australian jazz scene, though his career has been internationally recognized. Nock initially gained prominence playing with artists like Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy in the early 1960s New York scene.
His style blends hard bop, post-bop, and avant-garde influences with a distinctly lyrical and harmonically sophisticated approach. Nock is known for his improvisational skills and rhythmic complexity. He’s released over 20 albums as a leader or co-leader, including critically acclaimed recordings like *Close Up* (1991) and *Elasticity* (2017).
A significant accomplishment is his long-standing association with ECM Records, releasing several albums on the label. He’s also received numerous awards recognizing his contribution to jazz, including the National Jazz Award (Australia) in 1986. Beyond performing, Nock has been a dedicated educator, holding teaching positions at various institutions.
