Experience Michiaki Ueno
Michiaki Ueno is a highly respected Japanese composer and performer specializing in the *shakuhachi*, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. Born in 1982, Ueno initially trained within the Kinko school of shakuhachi playing, a lineage dating back to the 17th century, under the guidance of his grandfather, the renowned shakuhachi master, Watazumido Shigeo. However, he significantly broadened his practice by incorporating contemporary techniques and exploring improvisation.
Ueno’s style is characterized by a unique blend of traditional *honkyoku* repertoire with elements of jazz, ambient music, and electronic soundscapes. He frequently collaborates with artists across genres, including Ryuichi Sakamoto (with whom he toured extensively), and has composed for film and theatre. A key accomplishment is his work revitalizing interest in the shakuhachi amongst younger audiences globally.
He's released several critically acclaimed albums including "Sakura Sakura" (2016) and "Passage" (2020), showcasing both solo performances and collaborative projects. Ueno’s performances are noted for their meditative quality and innovative approach to a centuries-old instrument.
