Experience Michael Krasny
Michael Krasny is an American composer, pianist, and educator. Born in 1962 in New York City, he received his formal training at the Juilliard School, earning both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano performance. He furthered his studies with composer Milton Babbitt.
Krasny’s compositional output spans a wide range of genres including orchestral works, chamber music, vocal music, and solo piano pieces. His style is often characterized by a neo-romantic sensibility blended with serialist techniques learned from Babbitt, resulting in complex harmonic language and intricate textures. He frequently explores themes of memory, loss, and the human condition in his work.
Notable compositions include *The Book of the Dead* (2004), a song cycle for baritone and orchestra; *Northern Lights* (2011), an orchestral work commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra; and numerous piano sonatas and chamber pieces performed internationally. Krasny has received commissions from organizations such as the Koussevitzky Foundation and Meet The Composer.
He currently serves as a professor of music at Columbia University, where he chairs the composition department. His recordings are available on the Naxos label.
