Menna Mulugeta is an Ethiopian-American vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist forging a unique space within contemporary jazz and experimental music. Born in Addis Ababa and raised in Washington D.C., Mulugeta’s work deeply reflects both her heritage and her diverse musical upbringing – encompassing Ethiopian jazz, spirituals, and improvisation.
She gained prominence as a member of the critically acclaimed band, Butta P’Strut, contributing vocals and arrangements to their album *Red Burns*. Since launching her solo career, Mulugeta has released the EP *Belay* (2021) and the full-length album *Wede Harer* (2023), both on Nubya Records. *Wede Harer* specifically received widespread praise for its evocative soundscapes blending traditional Ethiopian scales with modern jazz harmonies and spoken word elements.
Mulugeta's style is characterized by her rich vocal tone, often delivered in Amharic, alongside intricate instrumentation featuring piano, keys, and electronic textures.
