Experience Melissa Aldana

Melissa Aldana is a trailblazing Chilean tenor saxophonist renowned for her innovative contributions to contemporary jazz. Born in 1988 in Santiago, Chile, Aldana began playing saxophone at age seven, quickly developing a distinctive voice marked by lyrical intensity and technical mastery. She gained international acclaim after winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2013, becoming the first female and first South American to claim this honor.

Aldana’s style blends deep roots in the jazz tradition with modern improvisational approaches, characterized by fluid phrasing, emotional depth, and complex harmonic exploration. Her work often reflects influences from John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter while forging a unique sonic identity that resonates globally.

Throughout her career, Melissa has released multiple critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader, including "Free Fall" (2010), "Second Cycle" (2012), "Back Home" (2016), and "Visions" (2019). She leads the Melissa Aldana Quartet, which features some of today’s top jazz musicians. Beyond recording, Aldana is an active educator and advocate for jazz innovation.
